Beer Canada established scholarship at Niagara College
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – August 14, 2015 – The top performing student in the Niagara College Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program will now be eligible for a $1,000 “Beer Canada Scholarship” award.
Beer Canada’s scholarship will be awarded to the top performing student entering the final year of the program. “Our strategy involves unifying the brewing community,” explained Luke Harford, President of Beer Canada. “The goal of the scholarship is to raise awareness among tomorrow’s brewing leaders of the broader community available to them.”
Beer Canada has pledged a scholarship award of $1,000 per year for the next five years. “It is a very exciting time for beer,” explained Steve Gill, General Manager of the Teaching Brewery, “Our students are passionate about beer and it is great to have their efforts recognized by our national industry association.” The Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program was launched in 2010 and has to date graduated 92 students. Today the program welcomes 54 new students each year. The program is supported by the Niagara College Teaching Brewery ‐‐ the first facility of its kind in Canada. The brewery forms a key component of Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute (CFWI) – a leader in culinary, wine and beer education in Canada. Located at Niagara College’s Niagara‐on‐the Lake Campus, the CFWI is also home to the College’s Teaching Winery – the first and only commercial teaching winery in Canada – and Benchmark, the college’s teaching restaurant.“Canada has a thriving brewing industry, we’re pleased to support it by providing graduates who are highly skilled and knowledgeable and ready to hit the ground running,” said Craig Youdale, dean of the Canadian Food and Wine Institute.
Beer Canada is a national trade association that advocates on behalf of its 32 members to ensure Canadian brewers are able to operate in a healthy regulatory environment and that beer remains a celebrated part of Canada’s culture. Membership is open to all brewers with a federal excise licence.
